How to find jobs with a biotechnology degree

Biotechnology is a discipline that utilizes living organisms to produce therapeutic drugs, diagnostics products, and many other additional products that significantly benefit our society.
  • Healthcare jobsBiotechnology has led to the development of many antibiotics for the treatment of different infections and also to the development of several therapeutic vaccines for the prevention of many diseases. Therapeutics biomolecules are too complicated to chemically synthesize, as a result, are required to be mass-produced in living cells such as bacteria, yeast or mammalian cells. These cells are often genetically manipulated to produce useful medicines. An individual's DNA can also be screened to determine the existence of any altered sequences that could indicate a risk of certain cancers or the onset of certain adult diseases. Genetic testing has also been used in pre-natal screening.
  • Forensic science jobsDNA analysis is widely used in the forensic science sector for solving various criminal cases.
  • Agricultural biotechnology jobsBiotechnology is widely applied in agriculture to improve crop yield and to make plants more robust to environmental stress making them resistant to insects that damage and lower crop yield. Crops are engineered to make them naturally resistant to environmental pests which in turn benefits the environment with the use of fewer pesticides and herbicides. Biotechnology can also improve the nutritional value of food and improve its appearance and taste.
  • Environmental science jobBiotechnologists use microorganisms in the treatment of sewage wastes and are also widely using them in cleaning the polluted environments such as oil spillages in the sea. The microbes metabolize various contaminants into harmless byproducts.
  • Biotech manufacturing jobsBiotechnology has been used for the production of biodegradable plastics, biofuels, high fructose corn syrup,  alcohol, the sweetening agent for soft drinks, production of chemical utilizing agricultural waste, and much more.
The biotech sector provides a great variety of career opportunities to qualified scientists. Most graduates enter the industry after completing a relevant degree in life sciences. Here is an article which could help you to explore biotech careers or look for what kind of jobs with a biotechnology degree you could get. If you are interested in gaining on hands-on experience of various biotechnology techniques, then these two articles will come in handy for finding biotech internships in India and biotechnology internships in the USA.

JRF Fellowships in India

  • CSIR holds the Joint CSIR UGC NET Test two times in June/December every year for determining the eligibility of the Indian National candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for determining eligibility for appointment of Lecturers (NET) in certain subject areas falling under the faculty of Science & Technology. The award of Junior Research Fellowship (NET) to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding admission/placement in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, as applicable.
  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh will hold a National level examination for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), for Indian national candidates at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Srinagar (J&K) and Varanasi on Sunday, July 22, 2018.

Postdoctoral fellowships

  • Simons Collaboration on the Origins of Life (SCOL): The origin of life is among the great unsolved scientific problems of our age. To advance our knowledge of the processes that led to the emergence of life, the Simons Foundation established the Simons Collaboration on the Origins of Life (SCOL).
  • Simons Foundation: The Simons Foundation invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships to support research on fundamental problems in marine microbial ecology. The foundation is particularly interested in applicants with training in different fields who want to apply their experience to understanding the role of microorganisms in shaping ocean processes, and vice versa, as well as applicants with experience in modeling or theory development.
  • TRIUMPH (Translational Research in Multi-Disciplinary Program) Postdoctoral Fellowship provides training in clinical and translational research. The immediate goal of this program is to recruit talented and productive Ph.Ds from top graduate programs to provide continued training in clinical and/or translational cancer research through didactic coursework, clinical rotations, and unique, interdisciplinary mentorships. A long-term goal of this program is to produce translational scientists who can be teamed with suitable physician-scientists to PI a translational research laboratory.
  • EMBL EBI Sanger postdoctoral fellowships: The EBI–Sanger Postdoctoral (ESPOD) Programme builds on the collaborative relationship between EMBL-EBI and the Wellcome Sanger Institute, offering projects that combine experimental (wet-lab) and computational (dry-lab) approaches. Both located on the Wellcome Genome Campus, their proximity fosters great opportunities for close collaborations. Our researchers have easy access to scientific expertise, well-equipped facilities and an active seminar programme.
  • Janet Thornton Postdoctoral Fellowship 2018 | Cambridge, UK: At the Wellcome Sanger Institute we are committed to enabling and opening routes back into science for those who have had a break from scientific research – for any reason. We understand that even a short time out of research can have an impact on your career, which is why we have created a postdoctoral fellowship providing an additional opportunity specifically for those who have been out of scientific research for 12 months or more to return to high-quality postdoctoral training. One Fellowship will be awarded each year. Each Fellowship will last for three years and can be worked full time, part time or flexibly.
  • Human Frontier Science Program | HFSP Postdoctoral Fellowships 2019 | 2019 Biology & Chemistry Postdoctoral HFSP Fellowship:  HFSP fellowships support top postdoctoral researchers that propose innovative, ground-breaking projects that have the potential to advance the knowledge in their field of study and open a new approach to the research problem. 2018 Biology & Chemistry Postdoctoral HFSP Fellowship.
